I absolutely loved this book! Since Sisters Alone is a novel in verse, the text needs to not only move the story forward, but be poetic. And it does an amazing job of incorporating engaging, heartfelt language and powerful poetic devices. Perfect for the classroom.

The characters were rich, authentic, real, and relatable. I connected instantly with Rama's struggles with the responsibilities of an older sister. The dual point of view was very well done! Even though Leena as the younger sister made me a little frustrated, I definitely understood her.

Sisters Alone is also an age-appropriate but realistic portrayal of grief (loss of a parent), mental health struggles, sister bond, and friendship--all of which middle school kids are dealing with. This is a book that will help them feel seen and learn how to navigate such issues.

Lastly, it is an adventure story that isn't Fantasy or centering boys! I feel like it's so rare to see female protagonists in survival stories. I was holding my breath for most of the book and so proud of the girls for thinking on their feet.

Sisters Alone is also such an authentic representation of Muslim culture without it feeling forced fed, naturally incorporated in the dialogue and mentions of acts of worship etc. This is why own voices books are so important!

I read this book in a single sitting (or laying, I started in bed after 11pm). I couldn't put it down once I was hooked. Highly recommend for everyone, but especially for parents of kids ages 10-14 and for middle school teachers. It's a great book for teaching Character Development & Motivation, POV & Perspective, and Poetic Devices. Feel free to DM me to chat lesson ideas!

Sisters Alone by Shifa Saltagi Safadi comes out September 8th. Preorder it today so we can show publishing that readers DO want more stories like this! 💪🏾
