Four Inspiration Reads for 2022
January is all about new beginnings, reboots, and shifting focus. It's also about looking for what will inspire you for the coming year.
Here are some books to help fuel you this year as you face whatever life throws your way!
1. Black Flamingo by Dean Atta is about being your authentic self. Join Michael as he enters the world, with tiny feather eyelashes. Travel from school to college, where he discovers his flock, and comes to term with his identity as a mixed-race gay teen. At university, take a seat in the audience and watch him find his wings as a drag artist, The Black Flamingo.
2. In A Good Kind of Trouble by Lisa Moore Ramée, Twelve-year-old Shayla has to learn to fight for what's right, when she realizes that some rules are meant to be broken when lives are at stake.
3. Pride by Ibi Zoboi inspires you to value who you are and where you come from, despite how outsiders might view you. In this contemporary, YA retelling of Pride and Prejudice, we meet Zuri Benitez who has pride. Brooklyn pride, family pride, and pride in her Afro-Latino roots. But pride might not be enough to save her rapidly gentrifying neighborhood from becoming unrecognizable.
4. Lastly, World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil shows us how beautiful the world is and that we should be in AWE of it. This special collection of essays about the natural world, and the way its inhabitants can teach, support, and inspire us.
