[REVIEW] Light for the World to See by Kwame Alexander

Light for the World to See by Kwame Alexander is a small but mighty read! I read it when I was in a bit of a reading slump to jump start myself out of it.

This mini collection includes three poems Alexander wrote in response to three important social/political moments for Black American--Colin Kaepernick taking a knee, George Floyd's death, and Barack Obama's inauguration. Morrison's quote at the beginning, sets the tone of Alexander's work. These are profound poems of resistance and healing. The final line brings it all back together, making it clear "this is for us."

Even though the poems are in response to events that go back in time, the poems take on progressively positive and hopeful tones as you keep reading. We start off pain and feeling powerless to recognition of inner power and being empowered.

I highly recommend this short piece for all readers. This is a great collection for folks who don't see themselves as poetry readers. Alexander has a special way with words that make you think, reflect, and feel.

What's a short book (under 200 pages) that had a huge impact on you?
